The disaster happened this morning.
There was the typical rush and crowd in our kitchen.
My older daughter Jeanna was complaining about the lunch I’d prepared. Patrick, my husband, was rummaging for his protein shake in the fridge. Our golden retriever Sam was weaving through the human traffic. And then, it happened — with a BANG.
“I’m sorry mommy!”
The whole family fell silent and turned around towards Ellie, my 7-year-old. She had knocked over an opened bottle of blood-red pomegranate juice. It was full and it spilled all over — on the counter, down along the cupboard, and all over the floor.
45,730 paper towel sheets each year
Now in a normal situation, I’d reach for a bunch of paper towels to quickly contain this mess. But here’s the problem.

As a family, we spent so much on paper towels. We often ran through an entire roll in a day. In a typical month, we burned through several 8-packs. I tried calculating once how much we used in a year — 45,730 individual paper towel sheets. That’s madness.
Yes, paper towels are convenient. But if you’re like my family — and I don’t think we’re unique — you might be spending $273 or more each year on paper towels. In other words, you’re literally throwing $273 into the wastebasket, because each paper towel is reusable ZERO times. Once you soak or wipe or dust something with it, it’s time for it to go in the trash.
And not just the wasted money
There’s also the environmental cost. We’re trying to do our part, reduce waste where possible, be a little more green. But it’s hard to be green when you’re chopping down trees so you can shove them into the trash, after you’ve soaked up a little bit of pomegranate juice with their dead fleshy pulp.
Maybe I’m being a bit dramatic. But I think it’s important to highlight why paper towels shouldn’t be this automatic reflex, so that whenever there’s a little problem, we tear off a square or two or five of one-and-done paper towels. But what are the alternatives? Well I’m glad you asked.
A perfect breeding ground for bacteria
We tried those those blue and yellow and purple microfiber cloths. You know, the ones made out of some mysterious plastic material. They are soft and they absorb liquids like crazy. That’s their big selling point, but it’s also where the problem lies.

Each time I used these microfiber washcloths to wipe something up, I’d rinse them and squeeze them out. It didn’t matter one bit. Each and every time, they become disgusting in a matter of hours or days.
They start to smell bad — mildewy and moldy and dirty. They start to scare me, because I’m sure they are loaded with all kinds of bacteria and each time I use them, I’m just spreading that bacteria around.
Like I said, this is just a consequence of the unnatural microfiber material. It makes for a perfect breeding grounds for scary and dangerous kitchen superbugs. So yeah. After running through a packet of these, I said thank you, but no. I don’t want to expose my family to cholera.
Don’t use cotton washcloths!
How about just some cotton washcloths? At least they’re not plastic, right?
“Cotton washcloths get need to be machine washed all the time…”
Yes and they are worse, in just about every regard, than the microfiber cloths I just talked about. The cotton ones get just as gross, just as quickly. But they don’t absorb very well. And they need to be machine washed all the time — otherwise, they look disgusting.
So when you factor in the detergent and the electricity to constantly wash these cloths, you’re probably not saving a penny, and maybe even losing money, over just tearing out sheet after sheet after sheet of paper towels.
Finally, a modern alternative
So there I was in the kitchen, looking at my frozen family, and the pomegranate juice drip-dripping off the counter and onto the floor. The whole gamut of options ran through my mind.
Would I reach for the paper towels, which we still had stored in the garage, even though we never used them? Would I use some nasty microfiber washcloth, or a dingy and ragged cotton square to try to contain this mess?
Nope. I had something much better, which we now use for all kitchen, window, floor, and counter problems. It’s as convenient and easy to use as a paper towel — but it doesn’t need to be thrown out like a paper towel. It absorbs incredibly well and yet it doesn’t harbor bacteria or look dirty or gross.
You might think I’m exaggerating. But it’s all true. Let me tell you a story.
A chance encounter
I was at the grocery store last month, standing in the paper waste aisle — where they keep the paper towels, napkins, etc. I was piling the stuff into my cart, because like I told you, my family used to burn through rolls and rolls of paper towels each week. And then, I heard a familiar voice behind me.
“You some big money on all these paper towels you’re buying…”
“Hey Kath!” It was Sophie, a former co-worker. It was great to see her again. We chatted for a few minutes and then she looked at my cart.
“Boy you’re really piling on the paper towels,” she teased me. “You might like this thing I found online last week. We just ordered a pack and it’s incredible. It’s exactly like paper towels, but completely reusable.”
“Huh?” I asked her to tell me more.
“Instead of paper, they’re made from bamboo fiber,” Sophie explained. “Here, I’ll send you the link. It could save you some big money on all these paper towels you’re buying.”
“Thanks Soph,” I told her, and made a mental note to check out these towels as soon as I get home. And here is what I found out.
Like paper towels, but 100% reusable?
